Allison Peacock and I did some overhead visuals for Invisible City dance party. It was a special one and kind of an opening ceremony for the Healing Power Picnic that followed the next day. We invited our pals ITAL (Mi Ami, Black Eyes, Sex Worker, 100% Silk, Thrill Jockey etc.) and PSYCHIC REALITY (Pocahaunted, Not Not Fun) to visit from New York and party with us all weekend long !! So they DJ'd the dance party alongside IC's own Max Gross (Glissandro 70, Kanada 70) and Grand AM (VOWLS, Polyphasic Recordings).

Our projector looked like this. We had another one that looked like a fancy lady. Why don't I have a photo of it???

The spirit of performance infusing the works in this program may not be deliberate or explicit; in many cases it plays out as an exercise in futility. Keith Cole's Left explains the conceptual underpinning of his mayoral candidacy. Julian Higuerey Nuñez’ World Record and Jonathan Culp and Monica Clorey's Reproduction Prohibited restage feats of might that are potentially quite traumatic, the former reimagining a moment of cultural importance, the latter subverting gender norms in its reperformance. We see a performer vanishing in front of her webcam as air passes through her bedsheets in Victoria Cheong's Degree of Freedom, and this ethereality is echoed in Yi Cui's Shadow Puppets through the interaction of emerging shapes and light.
While several works feature performances for the camera, others are more conceptual. Dan Browne's Hand Processing is the result of a camera test he had performed with the shutter closed. Other works present issues that are somewhat difficult to swallow, and require active reading and negotiation. Variations in visual approaches, narrative strategies and tactile experiences make for a dynamic program with clear conceptual and performative threads binding it together. I'm just experimenting with watercolor paints. So magical! Anna was helping me with some basics because she has much more practice than me and she has the "fine touch".
We spent an afternoon putting lots of paint on a big piece of paper, mixing colours, tinting snowdrops and jumping around.
I am making an animation soon using these paints and a camera but first I have a few things to figure out. Thanks Anna !!!

In Slight Gestures, Xenia Benivolski and Gregory Denton bring together ten artists whose processes begin with slight gestures, regulated actions and careful choices to create new objects that are strangely compelling. The pieces exude a sentimentality that inspires reverence and curiosity in the viewer. Why do we keep some things while we throw others away? How do you decide which piece should be seen, what is worthy of an audience? what is the minimal requirement for a gesture?

By using found and ready made objects, prints and collage, artists are building things that they feel warrant our attention and sentiment. Nikki Woolsey has created a family of objects that create new relationships by communicating in space, through gravity and placement. James Gardner rescued pieces of compositions from his studio floor otherwise headed for the garbage bin, Victoria Cheong presents a projection screen specific for video that has detached itself from its original function and Mark MacKinnon aesthetically alters his TTC Uniform in a minimal, performative gesture.

The Deeep at Somewhere There

I made a stage curtain to act as backdrop for The Deeep performance last night as part of a show with MICHELANGELO IAFFALDANO/D.ALEX/STEVEN SLADKOWSKI, SALAMANDER WOOL and JENNY GRAF. It was a refreshing show indeed, at Somewhere There's new space on Sterling Road (but really it's kind of in an alley way). The curtain really sparkled with the performance like crackling fire and glistening water.

After the show there was a silent lightning storm happening in the sky. Magic!

We've discovered the joy of improvised, site-specific decorating.
